Many of the people teaching English in monastic schools were not trained to teach it and are covering it in addition to their own subject. The most useful thing we can give them is not advice but a plan: a term of lessons that is complete, in order, and ready to teach tomorrow morning.
The scheme covers twelve weeks at four lessons a week. Each week has a language focus, a vocabulary set, a speaking task and a piece of writing, and each lesson plan states what to put on the board, what to say, how long each stage takes and what to do if the class finishes early or falls behind.
It assumes no photocopier, no textbook and no electricity. Where a lesson needs printed material, that material is designed to be copied onto the blackboard instead, and the plan says so. The last week is a review and celebration week rather than an examination, with guidance on reporting progress to parents and senior monastics.
The twelve weeks build on each other deliberately. Teaching them out of order is possible, but the overview shows you which weeks depend on which.
Almost every class loses lessons to festivals, illness and examinations. Weeks four, eight and twelve are lighter on purpose so you can catch up without cutting new material.
The margins are wide because they are meant to be written in. A used copy with your own notes is worth more to the teacher after you than a clean one.
