Fifty Minutes, Sixty Students: Speaking Practice in Very Large Classes
In a class of sixty, whole-class questioning gives each pupil about forty seconds of speaking time per lesson. Here is how to turn that into eight minutes.
Do the arithmetic once and it changes how you plan. In a fifty-minute lesson, perhaps twenty minutes involve pupils speaking. If the teacher asks questions and pupils answer one at a time, those twenty minutes are divided between sixty people. The average pupil speaks for twenty seconds. The confident five speak for most of it, and a dozen pupils speak not at all, which they can sustain for an entire school year without anyone noticing.
Pair work changes the divisor. The same twenty minutes, with pupils speaking in pairs, gives each pupil ten minutes. That is a thirtyfold increase and it requires no equipment, no funding and no change to the syllabus. The reason teachers avoid it is not ignorance; it is that pair work in a class of sixty goes wrong in specific, predictable ways.
Why it goes wrong
- The instructions are given once, verbally, in English, to sixty pupils, half of whom did not hear them.
- Pupils do not know when to stop, so the activity dissolves at different speeds around the room.
- There is nothing to produce at the end, so there is no reason to have done it properly.
- The noise rises to a point the teacher finds alarming and the activity is cut short, which teaches pupils that speaking tasks do not really count.
Every one of those is a design problem, not a discipline problem, and each has a fix that takes under a minute to apply.
Four fixes
Demonstrate, do not explain. Put one pair at the front and run the first exchange with them while the class watches. Thirty seconds of demonstration replaces two minutes of instruction and works regardless of how much English a pupil has.
Give a number, not a time. Telling a class to talk for three minutes produces three minutes of decreasing effort. Telling them to complete six exchanges each produces six exchanges. Pupils who finish early get a specific extension task written on the board before the activity starts.
Require one visible product. A single sentence written in the exercise book, one fact remembered about a partner, one answer to report back. It takes almost no time and it converts a diffuse activity into one with an end.
Rehearse the stop signal. Agree one signal at the start of term, practise it twice, and then use nothing else. A raised hand, a bell, a clap pattern the class echoes: the specific signal matters far less than never varying it.
On the noise
A class of sixty doing pair work is loud, and if your classroom shares a wall or a courtyard with another class, that is a real problem rather than a matter of nerve. Two adjustments help. Seat pupils so that partners are shoulder to shoulder rather than across a desk, which lets them speak at half the volume. And run speaking tasks in the first half of the lesson, when your voice is fresh enough to bring the room back without shouting.
It is also worth speaking to the teacher next door rather than assuming they mind. In most schools we have worked with, that conversation ends with both classes running speaking activities in the same period, which is quieter overall than one class doing it while the other works in silence.
A quiet English classroom is not a well-managed one. It is usually a classroom where only the teacher is practising.
